A Cruise Through Royal Caribbeans History

Expert Article By: Lucky Balaraman

* Introduction *

Ever heard of a luxury hotel that moves every half hour?

You guessed it: it?s a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, a mass of one hundred thousand tons, that glides on the ocean between Florida and the islands of the Caribbean on a regular basis.

Royal Caribbean International is the second largest cruise ship operator in the world with revenues in excess of $4 billion. It owns 28 ships with more than 65,000 berths on them and is growing. Here?s their story.

Flash back to 1969. An idea suddenly struck Arne Wilhelmsen and Edwin Stephan (Arne was a Harvard-educated investor and Edwin a famous Floridian businessman). The idea was that there was a large community of extremely wealthy Americans in Florida, and that this community would put down top dollar for a short, relaxing luxury cruise to the nearby Caribbean.

Arne and Edwin marketed this brainwave to some of the shipping magnates in Norway who readily bought it and came up with large investments. After a short gestation period, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (and an entire new industry) was born.

By the next year (1970), the infant company could speak of it?s first possession: The SONG OF NORWAY, a splendid cruise ship, weighing 18,500 tons and equipped for 700 passengers, custom-built in Finland. The most stunning feature of it was a cocktail lounge cantilevered around the smokestack (Edwin Stephen got the idea from the Seattle Space Needle). This lounge was built into many of the Line?s later ships and became the hallmark of the Company?s fleet.

* Growth, Growth and More Growth *

The founders of the Company pursued their vision of achieving market dominance through a continual program of adding ships and services. A consolidated record of this, which is very difficult to find elsewhere in the media, is presented below:

1971

Cruise ships NORDIC PRINCE and SUN VIKING arrive

1978

SONG OF NORWAY cut in half, 75-foot piece with 164 cabins introduced in between

1980

NORDIC PRINCE augmented the same way

1982

SONG OF AMERICA arrives with a larger, more luxurious lounge around the smokestack

1988

SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS, the largest cruise ship ever built at 73,162 tons for 2,276 passengers, arrives at a cost of $150 million

1990

- NORDIC EMPRESS arrives

- The Company expands beyond the Caribbean: Mexico, Alaska, and Europe are added as destinations;

- Industry?s first computerized booking system introduced

1991

- MONARCH OF THE SEAS arrives, ready for 2,354 passengers

1992

- MAJESTY OF THE SEAS delivered, equipped for 2,354 passengers

1993

- The Company goes public

1995

- LEGEND OF THE SEAS arrives, built for 1,804 passengers

1996

- GRANDEUR OF THE SEAS arrives at 74,000 tons and for 2,440 passengers

- SPLENDOUR OF THE SEAS, in the same class as GRANDEUR, delivered

1997

- Name changed to Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited (RCCL)

- RCCL buys Celebrity Cruises and its four working ships from Chandris Lines at a cost of $1.3 billion

- RHAPSODY OF THE SEAS, at 79,000 tons and for 2,435 passengers, is delivered

- ENCHANTMENT OF THE SEAS, at 74,000 tons and for 2,440 passengers, arrives

1998

- Enter VISION OF THE SEAS, 79,000 tons and to carry 2,435 passengers

- Joint ownership agreement signed with Chicago?s Pritzker family (that has $15 billion in assets) and Haifa?s Ofer family (that owns one of the world?s largest shipping companies, Ofer Brothers Shipping Co)

1999

- VOYAGER OF THE SEAS comes in at a whopping 140,000 tons for 3,114 guests

2000

- EXPLORER OF THE SEAS arrives; in the VOYAGER class, it has marine laboratories on board as well

2001

- ADVENTURE OF THE SEAS arrives: 3,114 passengers accommodated per cruise

- RADIANCE OF THE SEAS delivered: 2,100 passenger capacity at 90,000 tons, with gas turbines, it is the first in it?s class

- The company buys 20% of UK tour operator First Choice and launches a joint venture cruise line. It offers land-based tours in Alaska through Royal Celebrity Tours.

2002

- BRILLIANCE OF THE SEAS, a vessel in the RADIANCE class, arrives and is ready for duty

2003

- SERENADE OF THE SEAS, the third RADIANCE class vessel, is delivered

2004

JEWEL OF THE SEAS, RADIANCE class, makes its debut

? and of course, more ships, even larger that the earlier ones, are on order!

* Conclusion *

With revenues in excess of $4 billion, RCCL is a juggernaut which will not slow down.

Its ships are floating cities, boast amenities such as rock climbing walls, miniature golf courses, swimming pools, ice skating rinks, sun decks, basketball courts, beauty salons, exercise and spa facilities, gaming facilities, lounges, bars, cabaret performances, cinemas, shopping arcades, multiple restaurants and casinos.

Most importantly, when on a cruise, one experiences some priceless bonuses: unpolluted air and a virtually noise-free environment. These are truly, in the modern context, balm for the soul.

If you can afford the entirely reasonable average fare of $400 per person for a 3-night cruise in a luxury stateroom? don?t think twice about it, sign up for a cruise and gain the experience of a lifetime!

Resolved Question: How to reduce child support question?

Scenario: Father was paying around $450 a month in support for one child. Ex took him to court for more child support as it had been almost 4 years. He turned in his monthly 'gross income' and his support was reduce to by less than half. He is an insurance agent and his new wife is too in the same agency. Is it possible for him pay her more and reduce his salary, thus reducing his child support? He also owns a business where his mother works without pay. His new wife also owns it so it is possible that she takes the profit and he doesn't receive anything. He has a very nice 4 bedroom new home, a new truck, takes trips to the Caribbean often. Is this all legal for him to have all of this and not pay more child support. Is there something that can be done?

Voting Question: Adult daugther stealing for my mum ?

My sister is 29yrs old she works part time in gym but has no motive to get a job in teaching something she really wants to do. For years she has put her self in needless debt credit cards, store cards not paying uni fees and has always stolen mummy from my mum to pay for this lifestyle of trips to the caribbean etc. She would steal credit card or bank details from my mum and then steal the statements that come in the post. Or tamper with police reports or fraud papers that are sent until the truth eventually comes out. She has done it again spending £1000 on my mums credit card and I feel so let down. To see my mother cry breaks my heart as she is the strongest person i know and brought us up on her own not wanting a thing and she pays off her debt all the time. This is 6/7th time she has done this. My mum is 64yrs old she should be enjoying life. I have now brought a safe for my mum to put all purses and cards in and have taken my sisters debt card to monitor her spending giving her £10 per week. And spiliting her pay to pay back my mum and her debt I feel this is the last time I can help her am pregnant with my 1st child I need a healthy gran for my baby and ppl I can trust. If anyone has any serious ideas of how I can stop her doing this again I would be so grateful

Voting Question: My husband likes to hang out with his single friends at bars and nightclubs?

He likes going out with his single friends all the time, with or without me, he lies, and sometimes doesn't come home, we have been separated before, and he has even moved out before, but we always get back together, what should I think of his behavior, this has been going on for the last seven years, that we have been married, he is 35 now, and I am 33. But this has been the pattern since we we're dating when he was 27 and I was 25. We are childless. I know he thinks about his ex girlfriends who was a lot prettier and sexie than me,as she was hurt by him, and still single. I know he has seen her a few times since we have been married. Should I feel threatened?,.,,,,,,,,, I kind of fear the animosity this woman has against us. And my husband loves to drink, hang out and smoke a ton and marijuana with his hangout friends, he is a puerto rican surfer, and uses the fact that he claims himself to be a surfer as his rationale for hanging out all the time and drinking and drugging to excess, all he does when he hangs out is gossip about bullshit nonsense with his omedian, clown ass joker friends. He has a simple customer service job, and is pretty one dimensional, he enjoys drinking and hanging out and playing dominoes and doing nothing productive, which is common for his Caribbean roots.........we have no children, and often whe he goes onsirfing trips to other countries with his male only friends, I feel threatened, as no women or girlfriends are allowed along. I feel my marriage is suffering, as we have no children. He doesn't wear his ring often, should I be alarmed?...........also his ex girlfriend is on our ass sometimes and harrasses us at our homes,a dn our jobs, and all over Facebook, and vandalized our property, I don't know what to think of the entire situation.............

Resolved Question: Probability question: What is the probability that a flight is staffed by exactly 2 men and 7 women?

Air GoMango is a small airline that serves several Caribbean destinations. The company employs 10 pilots: 7 men, 3 women 33 flight attendants: 8 men, 25 women During a given trip, an aircraft must be staffed by 3 pilots and 6 flight attendants, chosen randomly. Case 2 c) If staff in the cockpit must be assigned separate responsibilities: 1) pilot, 2) copilot, and 3) communications officer, find the total number of ways to staff an aircraft for a given trip. I found this to be 797 448 960 (it is the right answer) d) What is the probability that a flight is staffed by exactly 2 men and 7 women? I thought that it would work doing (7P2*3P1*8C0*25C6 + 7P1*3P2*8C1*25C5+7P0*3P3*8C2*25C4) / 797 448 960 Since in the cockpit order matters (so I used permutations) but in the rest of the airplane order doesn't matter (combination). But I must be doing something wrong because I am not getting the right answer Thank you!

Resolved Question: Cheap countries to fly from the Washington DC area?

I have a friend inviting me to Mexico or an island in the Caribbean! They're flexible about location and I'd like to go somewhere new, so I'm not too into the idea of Mexico. Since our trip is being planned on extremely short notice (I have less than a month), there are only a few things I'm looking for. After that, the island you most recommend is a matter of opinion. I'm looking for somewhere I can get cheap airfare to, somewhere with good scuba diving, somewhere beautiful, somewhere backpacker friendly and somewhere fun! Vague, I know- but that gives you more to choose from and the opportunity to tell me why you chose that place! Thanks! :)
